CCEUs: 1.0 Core Competency, 0.5 Resource Development
Description:
“Communicating Effectively” is an ICF core competency which “focuses on what the client is and is not saying to fully understand what is being communicated in the context of the client systems and to support client self-expression.” Coaches use active listening to explore the meaning of a client’s words with the underlying premise that we are not assuming what is behind the word, phrase, or metaphor. By doing this effectively, we facilitate a client’s new insight.
In this session, participants learn verbal stretching, a tool used in the work of Verbal Aikido. Verbal Aikido is a non-violent approach to de-escalating verbal attacks. Two key elements to verbal stretching are centered expression and enhanced neutral listening. By facilitating a verbal stretching exercise, the coach supports the client explore the meaning of their words eliciting deeper insights.
In this session, participants will be able to:
1) Define centered expression and enhanced listening
2) Practice a verbal stretching format
3) Reflect on where they lost neutrality or centeredness
